You’ll have fun, fun, fun when the NortonMuseum of Art kicks off its summer exhibition of Barbie dolls and Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars on June 19, 2014. While the playful, in-depth exhibition, Wheels and Heels:The Big Noise Around Little Toys, opens at 10 a.m., the celebration begins at 5 and runs through 9 p.m. Admission is free for Florida residents every Thursday through Sept. 4, 2014. (Wheels and Heels is on view through Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014.)
The evening’s Art After Dark activities include Under the Hood of Wheels and Heels, exhibition guest curator Matthew Bird’s colorful and dynamic presentation of the history of both the beloved and enduring Barbie doll and popular miniature cars. The Shindigs maintain the summer theme of cars, dolls, surf, and sun, performing Beach Boys’ and other ‘60s and ‘70s classics. (Beach Boys trivia: In the early ‘60s, before signing with Capital Records and hitting it big, members of the group, recording as Kenny and the Cadets, cut a song about Barbie titled –Barbie.)
Visitors also can examine an array of real “Matchbox era” cars in the front parking lot while listening to Jammin’ with Jimmy spin nostalgic tunes from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. Budding artists can enjoy the popular Sketchbook Thursday and sketch a fashionably attired live model. A docent-led tour of the Industrial Sublime exhibition is also on the bill.
